Life learning and building commercial awareness – Unisource in action

Unisource is a free digital hub that connects students looking for degree-relevant work experience with businesses seeking assistance with tasks. We launched Unisource in 2020, working in collaboration with the University of Surrey and organisations across the county. Since then, we’ve been busy raising awareness of the Unisource hub among the student community.

We talked to University of Surrey undergraduate, Lauren Strong, about her experience of Unisource. Lauren, 19, is a first-year student, studying Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Surrey and is also a student ambassador. Lauren heard about Unisource while on campus and was keen to earn some extra money to support her studies.

What was the task?

I registered with Unisource as I thought it was a fun way to earn some money. My first bid to support Dr Heff’s Remarkable Mints was accepted quickly. The task was to build a database of pharmacists and dentists. I have a lot of time on my hands with University teaching being online, so it made it a lot easier to make money and learn skills as well. The fact that I could work remotely on my laptop from my kitchen table was great, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What commercial experience did you gain?

I think it was valuable in terms of developing my general communication skills. I was talking to people who I’ve never met before, working remotely. I discovered the etiquette of communication over email, rather than face-to-face. This was a great learning experience as I hadn’t used Excel before and I also developed my research skills.

Did you receive a Unisource review?

Yes, I received two separate reviews for the two tasks I’ve completed so far. Tom also gave me a recommendation on LinkedIn, which will be really helpful when I enter the world of work.

Would you complete a Unisource task again?

100%! I’ve told my flatmates about Unisource, so they are keeping an eye out for tasks too. I found the platform super easy to use – it’s simple and not overcomplicated.

Where students have had their work placements cancelled or cut short, Unisource offers a great alternative as a way to build a bank of bite-sized work experiences.

Unisource plans to roll-out across the UK in 2021. Students can easily and quickly register to join the Unisource community. If you have any questions, please email contact@unisource-tasks.com.
